Comprehensive, effective support services & programs leading to relapse prevention, self-sufficiency, and recovery for individuals affected by mental illness.
Daniel’s Place – Transitional Aged Youth (18-28)
Daniel's Place is a place to be comfortable, to make new friends, access computers and DVD players, games, and art supplies. This year 223 young adults attended 1,988 different support groups at Daniel's Place.
Programs include: becoming active and assertive on the way to wellness and recovery; peer coaching and independent living skills; support for family members; involvement in meaningful activities; social connectedness; making sense of the often confusing mental health system; finding treatment that fits individual’s needs; and identifying personal goals and building strategies to achieve them.
The supported employment training and placement program of Daniel’s Place employed 27 participants in paid positions in Step Up’s kitchen and café.
Since its opening in July 1998, Daniel's Place has consistently promoted early intervention and education to reduce the likelihood of the effects of mental illness becoming a persistent and disabling condition.
The facility is named after Daniel Greenberg (1959-1997). Daniel was a scholar, athlete, actor, humanitarian, and outreach worker at Step Up and member of the Step Up Board Of Directors. Daniel’s Place members are also members of Step Up on Second with full access to all of its services. Read a letter from a grateful Daniel's Place parent...

Street Outreach: The Step Up on Second Home Team
The City of Santa Monica has identified 50 homeless individuals living on the street who are the most likely to die without intervention. A list of fifty individuals is known as The Service Registry.
The Step Up on Second HOME Team reaches out and meets these individuals where they are. The Home Team provides intensive service coordination with the goal of permanent supportive housing and engagement in treatment. In 2009, the Home Team provided over 1000 contacts with homeless individuals in Santa Monica. As a result, thirteen of the most vulnerable homeless individuals in the community are now safely housed.
Intensive Services Programs
The Department of Mental Health funds three important Intensive Service Programs (ISP) provided at Step Up on Second: Field Capable Clinical Services (FCCS), Full Service Partnership (FSP), and Therapeutic Rehabilitation Program (TRP).
Field Capable Clinical Services (FCCS)
FCCS provides comprehensive, community-based treatment for adults affected by severe and persistent mental illness. This intensive service coordination program targets individuals with an intended outcome of reducing the need for psychiatric hospitalization. FCCS is designed to provide highly individualized services in a team-based environment. Services are designed to be comprehensive and multi-disciplinary and are tailored to the needs of the client.
Full Service Partnership (FSP)
The Full Service Partnership (FSP) is a program funded under Mental Health Services Act (Prop 63) specifically targeting individuals who are homeless and affected by a serious mental illness. Step Up on Second provides FSP intensive service coordination programs and support for adults in our S.T.E.P. program (Steps Toward Empowering People ) and for Transitional Aged Youth (18-25). FSP services are available to individuals demonstrating extended periods of homelessness, long-term institutionalization, multiple acute hospitalizations, or family dependence. Both FSP programs have specific criteria for enrollment based on an individual’s history, current level of functioning, and whether or nor they are accessing appropriate levels of mental health services. FSP guidelines are established by the County and State, and the members/staff ratio is 12:1.
Therapeutic Rehabilitation Program (TRP)
TRP provides general out patient services, medication support, therapy, service coordination, and benefits establishment. This is a non-MHSA (Prop 63) DMH county funded program located at Step Up on Second’s main site.
Some 40% of members of Step Up on Second struggle with homelesslessness. Step Up on Second offers services to assist individuals who are homeless because of the affects of a mental illness including:
- housing assistance
- laundry facilities
- shower facilities
- mail pickup
The sum of Step Up on Second’s comprehensive services equals the vitally important experience of being cared about and accepted, of finding community and inclusion.
